Kindergarten Daily Schedule

January 10, 2016 by Mary Amoson 20 Comments

My Daily Kindergarten ScheduleYou guys asked for a peek into a Kindergarten daily schedule. So, as always, I am here to help you take that peek into my classroom schedule. Here is a glimpse into my Kindergarten Daily Schedule.

Sharing Kindergarten's Daily Schedule

Kindergarten Daily Schedule

My schedule doesn’t always look exactly like this. I check out the services any and all my students will be receiving each year. Then I make adjustments based on their services and needs.

You will probably notice that I don’t have a morning meeting or calendar time first thing in the am. I do that on purpose. First, I have a TA (teaching assistant) in my classroom in the morning. But, I do not have her in my classroom all day.

Since I do not need an assistant to do calendar time, I choose to do that structured time when I don’t have a TA. First learning segment in the morning is my prime time with my students. Since we have Specials like music, PE, or computer lab, I know I will most likely get students who have moved and wiggled for 45 minutes. If they come from computer lab, we all wiggle for a few minutes.

Phonics

Then, we jam on it with phonics. This is an awesome part of our day. We involve video, music, technology, books, motions, sensory activities, and lots of hands on, interactive activities. Here is a link to more phonics activities and ideas.

Literacy Stations

Then we easily transition into Daily 5 and literacy stations. I run 8 stations a day. It sounds crazy but when my class size gets larger, I have to give the students more room to spread out!  You can read more about that here.

Most of this is done in small groups and differentiation is a huge element in making this time a success. Here is ton of information about this!

Sight Word Stations

That is our whole morning in a Kindergarten daily schedule. After an early lunch and too short recess, I am on my own for a good hour. This time works so much better for story time, then diving into sight word stations.

This is a time I allot to just work on sight words. Since all these stations are hands on and independent, they are easy to run without extra hands. Here is more info and links to sight word stations.

Calendar

Now we get to Calendar, which I LOVE. We start the year barely being able to sit and listen. We build on our abilities and expand our knowledge all year. This time is so precious to me since I am engaging all my learners
ALL at once. {We spend much of our day in small groups so this is one time we are all together.} Here is some ideas for calendar time too.

Science and Social Studies

Next in our schedule come unit. Our unit includes science and social studies. We tie in our story time to this topic, introduce it at calendar time, and then expand on the topic here.

I also try my best integrate experiments and art into this time. Here are science ideas and here are social studies ideas.

Math

Lastly, in our Kindergarten Daily Schedule, we get to Math and centers. We move onto math at the end of the day. Again, this isn’t because math is LESS important. Rather, I know my students will get extra hands and support if we teach math at this time.

Once we work with our math topic, we dive into centers. I run 6 work centers a week and stagger their work with play. My students play at least 15 minutes a day. And by the end of the week, all my students can play this whole time because their work is completed.

Centers

Here is a post about how I set up centers. Here are TONS of posts with enter ideas for the whole year called Center Saturday.

I wanted to update this on my schedule I used last school year, just so you can see a different mix of placing things.

I had to switch my calendar time this year also, due to staffing. Kind of glad to see I’m not alone!

I’ve changed my schedule around so many times, that it takes me a couple of months to get it right. I’ve always wondered how having calendar time later in the day would affect the students. Do you see a difference in having it in the afternoon versus in the morning compared to other years?

NO difference in am or pm calendar, but I do notice a HUGE difference between am and pm phonics… and I MUCH prefer am phonics.

I love that you have time for science and social studies. We have RTI everyday for an hour and that zaps our time for these subjects. I have tried to figure out ways to snag a few minutes here and there to get the standards in but it has been difficult. Love your center ideas!

Looks great! My preschool classes come for 1/2 days on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I really struggle with fitting everthing I want to do in a day. I have to be very selective, but there is SO MUCH I want to do!
