We use these packs with the Recipe for Reading letter order BUT we also have an option that follows the Orton Gillingham Letter Order, which is based on the science of reading research.
Letter Mm Activities and Printables for Kindergarten
Teaching letters and their sounds is always a fun journey in Kindergarten. But we don’t JUST teach letters and their sounds. We use the topic and idea of the letter M and expand it to be so much more. Additionally, as educators, we have a responsibility to make this path of learning so much FUN. I also read the Alphatales book and we listened to the Have Fun Teaching Video and Song for the Letter Mm.
Explicit, Systematic Phonics Based on Direct Instruction
One of the foundational elements of a great letter pack is an explicit, systemic approach to phonics instruction that helps guide learners with direct instruction. This is the core learning and you can see how we do this with this letter Mm activities and printables.
On day one, you can do a sensory approach to phonics. Then, on days two through four, the teacher can use these phonics printables and sound cards to lead an explicit and systematic phonics lesson. The best thing about this approach is that it takes into consideration the letter order previously taught along with decodable words. The teacher guide is also provided.
Fluency Strips for the Letter Mm
One simple and fun activity that we use as a warm-up, review, or wrap-up activity could be these fluency strips. You can see the two versions, one with only M and m listed. The second one has all the letters previously used taught including the letter Mm, which we are learning about. Students can work on tracking the letters, practicing reading the letters fluently, and even practicing the letter sounds. And since handwriting can be a struggle, we included a handwriting practice option with these fluency strips.
Letter Mm Activities and Printables with Handwriting Help
Every year, handwriting is a struggle and even though the Letter Mm isn’t a hard formation or path of motion, it can still be a challenge. We use these handwriting guides and printables to help guide students to create M and m.
Sound Sorting as a Fun Letter Mm Activities and Printables
When I began teaching, I did not understand the significance of sound sorting as a regular practice but it has proven to be a productive way to help little learners sort their brains and work on sounds that may even be confusing. We have Mm and not Mm sound options, then the Letters Mm and Gg sort. Why? Well, Gg was the sound for the week before. Finally, we have a 4-way sound sort that contains the last 4 sounds we have covered.
Decodable Readers and Review Activity
Remember how I told you about focusing on decodable words? We have leveled readers with words we can sound out along with high-frequency words we have learned. Additionally, for the Letter Mm Activities and Printables, we have a review printable that focuses on everything that was taught during this time frame.
A Favorite Letter Mm Activities and Printables
Check out this center or skill-building activity! We use the Mm themed for mailman delivering the mail to review all letters and sounds. You can easily differentiate by including only the letters and sounds you have covered or you can challenge your learners with all the sounds of the alphabet.
Great ideas. Part of me misses all the fun with letters in K, now that I teach 1st.
Love this post! So many great activities! ❤️
