Make Phonics FUN

September 26, 2014 by Mary Amoson 2 Comments

Make Phonics FUN
I absolutely LOVE teaching phonics.
I love teaching my
all about letter sounds, how to blend them together to make words,
how to break them down, and so much more.
If teaching is a show…
{and boy IS it a show…}
then we, as teachers, need to CHANGE the stage from time to time.
So, here is a little idea I wanted to SHARE with you all.
You know… to change it up,
keep it fresh,
 make it fun!
Every Friday, we make a group phonics chart.
Here is an example of a weekly chart for the gr blend.
But last week, we did something different.
Last week for the letter Gg,
we made our charts on white boards…

We thought about words that began with the letter Gg and we wrote them down.
Nothing special… typical stuff…
not that kinders think that…
I mean
THEY
LOVE
WRITING
ON
WHITE
BOARDS
.
But how can you make it better
and more fun?
We think of Gg words, we clap the syllables, we sound them out, and we write them down.
But is there more?
Let’s take this an extra step…
BACKWARDS.
Well, I handed each
  an eraser too…
Then, I give my students a LETTER.
Each student have to find that letter and erase it.
We are erasing “g”s here.
  Then, I give my
another letter to find and erase.
And another…
And another.
Sometimes we “find” other smaller words in the bigger words…
this is a teachable moment and we absolutely talk about that too.
The bonus is…
at the end of the lesson…
their boards are completely erased.
Was this a success?
Absolutely!
Will I do it again?
Absolutely!
Now, what about you?
Do you think about trying this with your class?
