Today we talked about Spencer, the main character from Too Many Toys…
another FUN and ENGAGING book by David Shannon.
Meet sweet {and spoiled} Spencer!
He loves to wear his space helmet and he has the classic BIG mouth!
We made his hair inside the helmet and then a mixture of both.
I am not sure which one I like better.
We played our amazing learning game covering this book and
all those reading comprehension standards.
{Stupid glare!!! Grrrr…}
We also wrote about the PROBLEM in this book at the top.
Then we wrote or drew illustrations showing three ways to solve the problem in the book.
This friend wrote:
“He has too many toys. [H]is mom (gets) mad. [H]is mom wants to get ride of them.”
then the solutions this friend drew are
{and I am trying to remember here because I can’t always interpret what they intend to draw}
First, Spencer cleaning up the toys.
Second, his mom throwing away the toys.
Third, the dad stepping on the legos and throwing them away.
I love making them think of more than one way to solve the problem
because it helps them to identify the actual problem.
Additionally, I like for my students to think about multiple ways to solve problems
because that is just real life!
Here is another student example.
This friend wrote:
“Spencer has too many toys. His mom is get[ting] rid of some [toys.]
First, put the toys in the toy box.
Second, have a yard sale and sell the toys.
Third, give the toys away to someone else.
