Today we talked about Spencer, the main character from Too Many Toys, another FUN and ENGAGING book by David Shannon. Meet sweet, and spoiled, Spencer! He loves to wear his space helmet and he has the classic BIG mouth! We made his hair inside the helmet and then a mixture of both. I am not sure which one I like better.
Too Many Toys Reading Comprehension game
We played our amazing learning game covering this book and all those reading comprehension standards with the book Too Many Toys.
Too Many Toys Writing Tasks
We also wrote about the PROBLEM in this book at the top. Then we wrote or drew illustrations showing three ways to solve the problem in the book.
This friend wrote: “He has too many toys. [H]is mom (gets) mad. [H]is mom wants to get rid of them.” then the solutions this friend drew are and I am trying to remember here because I can’t always interpret what they intend to draw.
First, Spencer cleaned up the toys. Second, his mom threw away the toys. Third, the dad steps on the legos and throws them away.
I love making them think of more than one way to solve the problem because it helps them to identify the actual problem. Problem-solving is a huge element in the book Too Many Toys. Additionally, I like for my students to think about multiple ways to solve problems because that is just real life!
Here is another student example.
This friend wrote: “Spencer has too many toys. His mom is get[ting] rid of some [toys.] First, put the toys in the toy box. Second, have a yard sale and sell the toys. Third, give the toys away to someone else. And check out my other David Shannon Author Study post.
