We began DIVING into our ocean unit last week and
we are wrapping up our school year this week.
{That is right…
we have 5 more days with students and I am in full OVERLOAD mode.}
I am so excited about this ocean unit
because it has been in my mind for two years…
and now I get to see it in print.
Here are some of the activities we SPLASHED into this week
to review our ELA Common Core Standards.
We played this Fill the Ten Frame game to practice make sets of tens with a ocean creature theme.
My class circles the animal they predict will win.
It gives them something to cheer for as the game progresses…
and I like for my students to practice predicting since they hate to lose.
For each roll, they color in one box in the ten frame under the matching creature on the worksheet.
The first creature to “fill the ten frame” wins!
When one creature fills the ten frame,
my student write in the number for each creature in the box provided.
Another activity we loved was this Fill the Bucket with Digraphs Game.
Using the shovels with th, ch, th, and sh digraph sounds,
my
complete the sort into their correct buckets.
We also practiced writing their color words on this beach themed sheet.
My kids ADORED this activity.
Using these beach towels and suns…
we built long vowel words like wave and flute.
After using the picture clue in the sun,
my
could add the long vowel piece to the strip to complete the word.
Next up is my favorite game.
We used the life preservers to complete the CVC words.
{I mean… come on! SERIOUSLY adorable.}
You can use the cards separated or together as a mat…
The picture clue is on top of the blank circle.
And the life preserver has the vowel in it.
Let’s DIVE into some math fun as well.
{Yes, the corny beach terms will keep coming.
They are making me happy in the end of the year frenzy.}
As an awesome number sense review of those teen numbers,
we put together these terrific sandcastle puzzles.
{The set contains puzzles for numbers 0-20,
but I only used the ones for 11-20.}
Each puzzle contains 4 parts;
a number symbol, ten frame, tally marks, and base ten pieces.
Your
will LOVE looking at the numbers pieces and putting the sandcastles together.
The best part is…
all the pieces are identical so they actually have to
use what they have learned about numbers to complete these puzzles.
During calendar we used these 1-100 cards to play number sense games as well.
Once we order the numbers on a chart,
I hide a crab or two behind numbers.
See it behind the number 28?
Next, I give my class number sense clues to figure out the number.
Here are some examples:
I have 30 shells and I give away 2. How many do I have left?
This number has 2 sets of ten and 8 ones.
My number is 25+3.
My whole LOVES the game.
I can easily differentiate as needed.
I also created a TON of addition worksheets.
There are two sets of worksheets,
but here is what makes them different than most.
ONE set has counters on the bottom.{I outlines them in red.}
The SECOND sheet has number lines at the bottom. {I outlined them in blue.}
You can use the same problems to your students and let them solve them using different tools.
Lastly, your freebie!
Sweet Deanna Jump came up with a saying
Click on the images above or {here} to grab and
print these cards for your students today.
{Maybe it will take something off your LONG end of the year to-do list?!}
And if you loved these activities from my Oceans of Fun unit, you can grab them on TpT.
It has so much more items than what I showed you today.
Here is a preview of ALL the activities in this pack.
This is so cute. I think I'll use it for summer school!
MAry this is such a cute unit. I love your end of the gift too!
What a fantastic theme to end the year!
