As you begin your ocean themed activities in Kindergarten, I know you will love these ideas. We began DIVING into our ocean unit to complete the year, it is a great time to review our learning, finish assessments, and expand our learning opportunities.
Ocean Themed Activities For Kindergarten Math
You are going to love this math game. To start, add the inserts into the pocket chart dice. We played this Fill the Ten Frame game to practice make sets of tens with a ocean creature theme. Then, they grab the ten frame printable.
To play this game, students circle the animal they predict will win the game. It gives them something to cheer for as the game progresses. Additionally, I like for my students to practice predicting since they hate to lose.
Next they roll the die. For each roll, they color in one box in the ten frame under the matching creature on the worksheet. The first creature to “fill the ten frame” wins! When one creature fills the ten frame, my student write in the number for each creature in the box provided.
Fill the Bucket Ocean Themed Game
Another activity we loved was this Fill the Bucket with Digraphs Game. Using the shovels with th, ch, th, and sh digraph sounds, my little learners complete the sort into their correct buckets. It is a simple sort but so much fun to match with shovels. I also love to throw in the word pail as well just to have fun.
Color Words
It occurred to me a few years ago that I start the year with color words, but I really needed to go back over it again. We also practiced writing their color words on this beach themed sheet. My kids ADORED this activity. Isn’t this a FUN Ocean themed activity for Kindergarten
Long Vowel Words
Using these beach towels and suns… we built long vowel words like wave and flute.
After using the picture clue in the sun, my little loves could add the long vowel piece to the strip to complete the word.
You are a Lifesaver
Next up is my favorite game. We used the life preservers to complete the CVC words. {I mean… come on! SERIOUSLY adorable.} You can use the cards separated or together as a mat… the picture clue is on top of the blank circle.
And the life preserver has the vowel in it.
Sandcastle Number Sense
Let’s DIVE into some math fun as well. {Yes, the corny beach terms will keep coming. They are making me happy in the end of the year frenzy.} As an awesome number sense review of those teen numbers, we put together these terrific sandcastle puzzles.
For an additional differentiation tip, check this out. The set contains puzzles for numbers 0-20, but I only used the ones for 11-20. Each puzzle contains 4 parts; a number symbol, ten frame, tally marks, and base ten pieces. You can easily have different groups work on different number sense puzzles.
Your little learners will LOVE looking at the numbers pieces and putting the sandcastles together. It is easier for them to do these by themselves than together. Teamwork with puzzles is loud and takes a while but it is such an important skill for Kinders to have!
Finally, my favorite part of this game is how all the pieces are identical so they actually have to use what they have learned about numbers to complete these puzzles.
Pocket Chart Game
During calendar we used these 1-100 cards to play number sense games as well. To start, we order the numbers on a 100 pocket chart. Then, I hide a crab or two behind numbers so the students do not know where the crab or crabs are hidden.
Can you see the crab hidden behind the number 28?
Next, I give my class number sense clues to figure out the number. Here are some examples. I have 30 shells and I give away 2. How many do I have left? This number has 2 sets of ten and 8 ones. My number is 25+3.
Lastly, I can not tell you how much my whole LOVES the game. They beg to play it everyday and it is so easy to use number sense clues related to what we are learning about. I can easily differentiate as needed.
Fluency Printables
I also created a TON of addition worksheets for an Ocean themed activities for Kindergarten . There are two sets of worksheets, but here is what makes them different than most. ONE set has counters on the bottom.{I outlines them in red.} The SECOND sheet has number lines at the bottom. {I outlined them in blue.} You can use the same problems to your students and let them solve them using different tools.
Ocean Themed Printables Freebie
Lastly, your freebie! I found these awesome and CHEAP buckets and shovels at Target for $1. Many teachers grab them from The Dollar Tree as well.
Sweet Deanna Jump came up with a saying so I made these cutie pie cards to print out.
Click on the images above or {here} to grab and print these cards for your students today. {Maybe it will take something off your LONG end of the year to-do list?!} And if you loved these Ocean themed activities for Kindergarten activities, you can grab them on here.
