David Shannon Author Study: Each year my students complete an author study to review all those reading comprehension standards we have worked on all year. Honestly, this study is a joy and so much fun, I am sad every time we send home our finished books.
David Shannon Author Study
My kinders love learning about David Shannon as an author and illustrator just as much as they enjoy reading his amazing books. We worked on our over two weeks and we learned using 7 of David Shannon’s books.
Here are most of the books included in this author’s study.
On the first day of the study, we use the book No, David! to discuss how important the title of a story can be and how the picture on the front of the book can tell us so many things about the book. In fact, we can use the book cover to make predictions about the book.
We make our own book covers like the cover to No, David! Some students liked the idea of their mothers telling them NO, while others insisted their mothers would say YES because they make good choices.
Here are some of our book covers my little learners used similar cover images.
While others drew their own bad choices.
Or good choices.
Reading Comprehension Game
Next, we can play our No, David! Game. This is seriously such a HIT in my classroom I can’t begin to explain how much my little wonderfuls enjoy playing these games. We cover so many standards in a FUN way and collect TONS of AMAZING data.
Since each game comes with multiple choice cards and an answer key… it can also be a tool to send home with parents or to use as a RTI or MTSS.
David Shannon Author Study Art Project
And what author study would be complete without an art project for your little loves to complete Here is the most memorable character who we can ALL relate to… DAVID! Can you see the triangle nose? TOO CUTE.
