to review all those reading comprehension standards we have worked on all year.
Honestly, this study is a joy and so much fun,
I am sad every time we send home our finished books.
My kinders love learning about David Shannon
as an author and illustrator just as much as they enjoy reading his amazing books.
we learned using 7 of David Shannon’s books.
{We omitted It’s Christmas, David for time reasons only.}
Here are most of the books included in this author study.
{I really want to add Bugs in My Hair to this unit… what do you think?}
This post is the first part of our Author Study.
On the first day of the study, we use the book No, David!
to discuss how important the title of a story can be and
how the picture on the front of the book can tell us so many things about the book.
In fact, we can use the book cover to make predictions about the book.
We make our own book covers like the cover to No, David!
Some students liked the idea of their mother’s telling them NO,
while others insisted their mother would say YES because they make good choices.
Here are some of our book covers my
used similar cover images.
While others drew their own bad choices.
Or good choices.
We also played our No, David! Game.
This is seriously such a HIT in my classroom I can’t begin to explain how much my
enjoy playing these games.
We cover so many standards in a FUN way and collect TONS of AMAZING data.
Since each game comes with multiple choice cards and
an answer key… it can also be a tool to send home with parents or to use as a RTI.
And what author study would be complete without an art project for your
to complete.
Here is the most memorable character who we can ALL relate to…
DAVID!
Can you see the triangle nose?
TOO CUTE.
