Reading Comprehension Game Questions Answered

October 15, 2013 by Mary Amoson 2 Comments

Reading Comprehension Questions Answered I guess last week’s post about “Write Me Three Questions Answered” got you guys asking,
because I had a sweet friend ask me about the Reading Comprehension games
I create based on awesome Children’s Literature, many of which are now request from you guys.
She asked how I use these games and why I feel they are important.
LOVE IT…
I started creating these games a few years ago because I noticed my students could not answer questions
about the books we were reading accurately.
These students struggled to make text to self connections.
I knew my students needed these skills when they get to 1st grade
so I needed to help get them ready.
As a K teacher I needed to set my students up for success in every way possible…
 Reading Comprehension HELP
THEN Common Core came out and
so many reading comprehension skills became kindergarten requirements.
{This was one time I was actually one step ahead!}
There are some of the Common Core Strategies.
RL.1. With prompting and support, answers questions about key details (characters, setting, major events) in a text.
K.RL.3. Identifies characters and setting in a story.
K.RL.4. With prompting and support, asks and answers questions about unknown words in text.
K.RL.5B. Identifies common types of texts.
K.RL.7. With prompting and support, identifies the relationship between illustrations and text.
K.W.5. With support, edits and adds details to writing in response to suggestions
K.SL.2. Confirms understanding of texts read aloud by asking and answering questions
My reading comprehension games cover ALL these skills in a sneaky way…
my students have no clue I am covering all these common core standards,
they think they are playing a game. Here is how I use these games.
1. We read the book together and incorporate a CAFE reading strategy in lesson.
2. We talk about the book together.
3. We turn the book into a listening station and use it for Listening to Reading.
4. Next, we use the book in our Daily 5 stations.
One station uses a writing prompt like this one.
I usually man this station until our self to text connections strengthen and our ability to write independently occurs.
My assistant uses the reading comprehension game at another station.
We use the game board, unifix cubes for game pieces, and a die.
Since each game as lots of questions and an answer key, it is easy to manage and play.
Most importantly, it is SO MUCH FUN for the kids.
They run walk as quickly as they can to this station each week. {Yes, we play at least one game a week!}
5. Lastly, I use these games to keep data on my struggling students.
We keep score of how many questions they get right out of how many attempts.
It is so easy to show students who show progress and those who continue to struggle.
Here is an image of the latest request book pack I created…
And here are a TON of options to get you into a fall mood…

I hope this answers all your reading comprehension game questions,
but ask away in the comment section below if I missed anything you are curious about…

I’m sure your students really enjoy these games while learning! I also found out that it is more effective when children enjoy while learning because it takes off the pressure but they can still retain the important information because of the fun activities (one is reading game). This was my experience with my grandchildren. Thank you for sharing! http://easylearnreading.com
