Now and Then Activities in Kindergarten Start Here
To begin the conversation of past and present in Thanksgiving, I love to use this book, The Pilgrims’ First Thanksgiving by Ann McGovern. This book depicts The First Thanksgiving so we talk about the lives of Pilgrims and how different their lives were compared to ours.
Thanksgiving Now and Then Activities
Next, we talk about how basic things were different a long time ago for the Pilgrims versus now. We work on this simple pocket chart sort to show how some things are similar while other things are different. The conversations and questions start flowing and those little brains start firing. Specific examples are the key here.
Children Now and Then, Past and Present
Next, let’s dive into how children’s lives are different from long ago to today. Many little learners struggle with the idea of how hard pilgrim life was even for children. We use these charts to lead our discussion of Pilgrim lives. There are two versions, one that is blank so you can project via a smart board and another that is already filled in. I like to use the filled-in version to make sure I am filling in the chart by hitting all the details.
We detail what chores looked like then.
Additionally, we detail what chores look like now. Don’t be surprised if some of your little learners don’t understand the idea of chores. Some families have chores while others do not. If needed, we also include the idea of classroom jobs and responsibilities.
We use these pocket chart sorts to compare our lives to the lives of the Pilgrims. Here is a look at the two cards for “now” and “then” cards. Plus, check out this up-close peek at the Chores Now and Then cards.
Now and Then Learning Printables
Busy teachers need easy-to-plan resources they can use to integrate social studies topics into other subjects. Check out these pilgrim labeling activities that would make an ideal word work or a writing station. Labeling is a huge weakness for my little ones for many years. I know they need to make these connections to help improve their vocabulary and therefore their writing skills.

Center or Station Work with Now and Then Theme
One center or station you can use to check for understanding of the now-and-then theme could be these printables. I also provided these “now and then” mats to use in small groups and centers. I love to use these with dry erase markers for the colored version and with crayons for the black-and-white version to allow my students to identify things in the picture that are out of place. Students can circle (or color) the things that belong and cross out what does not belong.
