Letter Kk is so much FUN. It is a great time to learn about the letter that sounds like the letter C. Here are great Letter Kk Ideas to make learning fun inviting and engaging.
I start this letter like I do all my letters, we read the Alphatales book about the letter Kk and follow it with the mini-books. We also watch this video from Have Fun Teaching for the Letter Kk.
Letter Kk Idea #1- Sensory Phonics
We take time to use these sensory sheets to work on the formation of the letter. How? We use gel packs, sand trays, plastic canvas, or even play dough.
Letter Kk Idea #2- Printable Practice
We use these printables to cover handwriting, letter identification, and sound sorting. These are some of the writing and word work activities we work on throughout the week in small groups. I love this sound sorting sheet for those students who can’t produce the /k/ sound.
Many of those students substitute the /k/ sound with a /t/ sound. I can use this sorting activity to make sure each of my students can hear and sort /k/ and /t/ sounds.
Handwriting is HUGE in kindergarten. We work on handwriting every single day. One trick I learned is to integrate ABC order, multiple letter formation, and capital and lowercase letters all at once. HOW? We use themed sheets each week. For the letter K, we use Koala Bears.
These sheets allow for differentiation. Each of the four sheets allows students to practice letter formation.
You can see one sheet allows the student to add a lowercase letter to their parent letter. Another has students writing both uppercase and lowercase letters, as does the third, but with different letters.
Letter Kk Idea #3- Phonics Structures
We also practice letter sounds each week. Here is day one of our phonics activity. We do hands-on phonics sheets three times a week. Y
And here is Thursday’s activity. I love this daily phonics activity. They are more than just the worksheet. We are counting syllables, finding small words in bigger words, and locating nouns and verbs. I tell my students constantly that the lesson is more than what we just write down.
Letter Kk Idea #4- Charting
On Friday, we work on a whole group chart for our letter. I use my computer to project the red copy. My students complete the version on the front. Charting is a great way to accelerate and remediate phonics in the classroom. Many times students ask me to write words with phonics skills we have not covered yet, so they get a preview of that sound and what happens with it in phonics.
Letter Kk Idea #5- Sound Matching
We also work on these letter sound-matching games. We match the Koala with the letter on it to the eucalyptus leaf. You can do all 26 letters, just the ones you have covered, or any between. This is also a smart way to assess who knows their initial letter sounds. 🙂 But we don’t stop the letter of the week with reading. I love to carry the K theme over to math when I can.
Letter Kk Idea #6- Math Integration
Here are two versions of comparing number sheets. The red version uses numbers less than ten. The blue use numbers more than ten.
Students count the numbers and then use the NOSE of the koala to add the < > or = symbol to the mats, once they are laminated of course. This makes a fun and interactive math center. There is also a supporting worksheet you can use as well.
Here is a lot more in this pack to make the letter Kk FUN in your classroom.
