Hair Gel Sensory Bag

September 18, 2014 by Mary Amoson 3 Comments

Hair Gel Sensory Bag
I found this great idea on Pinterest to make a HAIR GEL sensory bag!
{here is where I found it, thanks In My World.}
I love doing anything HANDS ON and FUN to make learning memorable in my classroom
so I KNEW this was an idea I wanted to try.
My
 deserve this!
I went to the store and bough their cheapo hair gel.
They have yellow, blue, and clear options.
I got the clear so I could use food coloring to make it what I wanted it to be.

Here where the supplies:

hair gel
food coloring
baggies
I suggest using good quality baggies.
Don’t go cheap, get the good ones because the hair gel smell can get strong.
Here are the sandwich sized baggies I made with bright colors.
 Well, the kids LOVED them.
But the teachers {ME} did NOT.
Why?
I put TOO much gel in them and made the colors TOO dark.
And honestly…
I should have made them bigger.
So what do you do when you love an idea but you make it wrong?
YOU DO IT AGAIN.

HERE IS HOW YOU SHOULD REALLY MAKE HAIR GEL SENSORY BAGS

I remade all 20 bags with more gel.
This time I got yellow and blue gel this time and put in the baggies without the coloring.
I wanted to try the lighter tint…
 Success!
Although I think I can add a drop or two to darken it a bit.
The gallon size baggie worked great.
PLUS… I used the double zipper bags and they held in the strong gel smell better.
I only put in enough gel to cover the bag when it is flat and I pushed all the extra air out.
MUCH BETTER.
I did use the clear version of the gel with food coloring to make the green baggie,
but I didn’t color it too much, 5 drops of the food coloring.
The green is their favorite since it is darker…
but you can still see the paper behind it.
 Perfection.
One thing I also want to suggest is to practice tracing using these bags,
but also try letting them write the letter on their own.
Some of my little ones can’t transfer from the card to the bag!
HUGE problem if I don’t know about it.
I can make sure they are learning if I do know about it.
Try this in your classroom!
I know your
will love it as much as mine do.
If you need pre-made Letter and Number Sheets, you can consider this pack.
And here is a set of all the Dolch Sight Words in the same format.

Both of these packs here created from teacher requests.
