Hair Gel Sensory Phonics Activities: I found this great idea on Pinterest to make a HAIR GEL sensory bag! {here is where I found it, thanks In My World.} I love doing anything HANDS ON and FUN to make learning memorable in my classroom so I KNEW this was an idea I wanted to try.
How to Make Hair Gel Sensory Phonics Activities
My little learners deserve the Hair Gel Sensory Phonics Activities and they are so simple to make. You will love these sensory bag hair gel.
- Gallon-size baggies, preferably freezer style with the double zipper bag.
- 3 bottles of cheap hair gel from the dollar store
- food coloring
If you find hair gel, they may have yellow, blue, and clear options. I got clear so I could use food coloring to make it what I wanted it to be. I suggest using good-quality baggies. Don’t go cheap, get the good ones because the hair gel smell can get strong. Here are the sandwich-sized baggies I made with bright colors.
My Mistake with Hair Gel Sensory Phonics Activities
Here is what big mistake I made with Hair Gel Sensory Phonics Activities. Well, the kids LOVED them. But I did NOT. Why? I put TOO much gel in them and made the colors TOO dark. And honestly… I should have made them bigger. So what do you do when you love an idea but you make it wrong? YOU DO IT AGAIN.
Here is How You Should Really Make Hair Gel Sensory Phonics Activities
I remade all 20 bags with more gel. This time I got yellow and blue gel this time and put it in the baggies without the coloring. I wanted to try the lighter tint… Success!
Although I think I can add a drop or two to darken it a bit. The gallon-size baggie worked great. Plus, I used the double zipper bags and they held in the strong gel smell better. I only put in enough gel to cover the bag when it is flat and I pushed all the extra air out. This version turned out much better.
Watch How Much Food COloring You Add for Hair Gel Sensory Phonics Activities
I did use the clear version of the gel with food coloring to make the green baggie, but I didn’t color it too much, 5 drops of the food coloring. The green is their favorite since it is darker… but you can still see the paper behind it. Perfection.
One thing I also want to suggest is to practice tracing using these bags, but also try letting them write the letter on their own. Some of my little ones can’t transfer from the card to the bag! HUGE problem if I don’t know about it. I can make sure they are learning if I do know about it. Try this in your classroom!
I know your little wonderfuls will love it as much as mine do. If you need pre-made Letters and Number Sheets, you can consider this pack. And here is a set of all the Dolch Sight Words in the same format. Both of these packs here are created from teacher requests.
Great idea! Thanks for sharing your trials and tribulations- now I don't have to make the same mistakes! I'm making these this weekend.
