Center Saturday

October 4, 2014 by Mary Amoson Leave a Comment

Hey guys!
Are you ready to talk about centers this week?
Math centers to be exact!
{I am still getting use to math centers only
but my students are LOVING it.}
This week we focused our learning around our theme of
Nuts and Squirrels,
the letter Hh, which part of this bundle. And
practice tons of math skills we are working on.
We are working hard on number words and ordering numbers.
The yellow table hosted a nut sequencing activity.

We printed these nut numbers onto light brown copy paper.
(Tan copy paper actually and I also use it for the faces for all my art projects!}
We cut up the nut shaped numbers, then glued them down in order on a sentence strip.

This activity was a great way to practice cutting, counting, ordering, and number recognition.

Our orange center was a FUN way incorporate our letter of the week, Hh, into math.
So we used a table tent to display numbers 1-20 and hotdog number to fill in the missing number.

 I love this table tent since some of my students have trouble transferring numbers from other locations in the room… like my number wall.
{Letter Hh {Print & Play Pack}, it’s part of this bundle.
The red center focused on ten frames.
{Letter Hh {Print & Play Pack}
We used these hay bales sheets to fill in the ten frame to MAKE the number given on the top.
This sheet is two sided, so there are two digit numbers on the BACK.
Most of my
were able to do the front {one digit side} but the back was harder.
For those students who needed more help,
 I was able to spend  time {making teachable moments} reteaching tens and ones.
Since so many of my students were activity engaged in math centers,
this was the perfect chance to break things down and help.
Here I am showing this student how we can use the full ten frame
to make a “1” for one set of 10, then a ten frame with 9 pieces for a “9.”
I watched this student struggle with the first two digit ten frame.
I believe she was overwhelmed.
Sooo… I asked her how she would solve the problem.
She didn’t know where to begin.
She just saw a ton of dots.

So I told her we can use the tens and ones to make the number.
Then we did the next one together.
She did another problem and got it right…
but she still couldn’t explain why.
{And isn’t this the most important part of the whole activity.}
So I did another one,
explaining how to make the number 12 again with more visuals.
Then she got it.
And she was able to make about 5 more two digit numbers.
I count that as number success.

Purple table contains this nut themed number word match.

And since some of my students are still working of their number words,
we did pull the number cards that belong on front white board down as an additional resource.

And our blue center was an Hh themed numbered sheets as well.

I love using these picture themed sheets because if one of my
makes a mistake,
they don’t mind redoing it and trying again.

 And our last work center was the green table.
This was not only my favorite work station, but a HUGE it for my
In this center, we read the number words on the cards and
found the number word nut to “feed” the squirrel.

 Do you remember my coloring tip?
{I make different colored cards for each student at that station for easy organization and clean up.
These cards are also color coded as well!
Here is what another set of cards looks like.

Daily 5 and
classroom management and
MORE soon!
And just wait until Sunday.
