Veterans' Day Activities for Kindergarten

Veterans Day Activities for Kindergarten: Imagine superheroes, like Captain America or Wonder Woman, who defend us from bad things. Well, veterans are like real-life superheroes who work hard to protect our country and all of us.

On Veterans Day, we celebrate all the soldiers, sailors, pilots, and other brave people who have been a part of the military. Some of them might be mommies, daddies, grandpas, grandmas, or even some of our neighbors.

Why is Veterans Day Important?

Why is Veterans Day so important? Well, think about all the things we love about our country—the beautiful parks, the schools, the playgrounds, and our homes. Veterans help make sure we can enjoy all these things safely.

How Can We Honor Veterans Day?

To show our appreciation and thankfulness, people sometimes wave flags, have parades, and give special cards or flowers to veterans. Some people even say, “Thank you for your service!” when they meet a veteran.

It’s essential for us to remember and thank these brave people, even if we are very young because they have done so much for us. So, on Veterans’ Day, let’s take a moment to think about the heroes in the military and say, “Thank you!” to them in our hearts.

I went through my unit from last year and I added a ton of activities my kids love and need. This is an ABC order activity using the Branches of the Military terms and cards. The students put the cards in ABC order and then fill in the optional response sheet.

Here are awesome 1-50 number practice sheets.

Number writing practice sheets

There are 4 to choose from and provide perfectly differentiated levels. I love to print these in color and place them in page protectors. We use these sheets at our Daily 5 station for writing. We explore how important Veterans are using this ca/have/serve chart.

Veterans Can/Have/Are Chart

This little wonderful says: Veterans can fight for us. Veterans have clothes, hats, and shoes. Veterans serve us. Then we color each square and label it with a military branch.

When they create it, they will remember it. Here are some more student examples.

Fill the Ten Frame Game

We also build our number sense and play games with the same theme. This is a great way to see and hear if your students can use the vocabulary from the topic. My students often say, “I want the Marines to win. I think the Coast Guard is in the lead.”

Here is another math skill game that allows my students to create double digits numbers using ten frames. And of course, I used different colored card stock to make the same game for 4 different students at center time.

  1. Thank you for teaching about Veterans. I am a Veteran and my husband is currently deployed. Our son started kindergarten this year and his school is not doing anything for Veterans Day. I am therefore taking him out for the day so that he can go to a Veterans Day parade and we will spend the day reading books and making projects in honor of our veterans.

  2. We have mice in school too – I HATE finding them in the glue traps. It is so heartbreaking (though I understand they are pests). What worked for my family at how were peppermint packets. They sell them at the hardware store specifically to deter mice. You need to use a few if you have a large classroom, and you need to replace them after awhile or the mice will come back and use the packets for nesting material! But they seem to really dislike the smell of peppermint. The good thing is, these packets are nontoxic! Very important around little hands and mouths.

  3. Your better than me. I hate mice. If I found them I would not have caught them and released them…I would have made sure they would not be making a return appearance in my room..yuk!! Love the veterans day activities. Thanks for the computer links page. My kiddos loved the Halloween one from last week, so I am sure this one will be just as great!

  4. Your post gave me the heebie jeebies. I am terrified of the things and have 2 in the house recently (due to weather conditions and the open field close by). The one time I saw one I had to call my husband home from football practice while I sat upstairs on my bed.

  5. We had mice in an old house we lived in that came over to visit because a tree was taken down across the street and they ran everywhere in the neighborhood. I barrowed a cat from my grandmother and then sat up all night listening to her crunch. Not a really good plan but it did work.
