There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Clover: St. Patrick’s Day is coming and I have a plan to get your little loves activity engaged in learning using this book, There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Clover! Every student loves the old lady. She eats the oddest, craziest things and gets our creativity flowing.
There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Clover
I love to read to my students out loud to show them emotions, voice hesitations and speed, and fluency to my listeners {and learners.} After doing a class read-aloud, we sequence the story together using these cards and a pocket chart. Then, during Daily 5, we complete activities to make this book come alive {as well as cover so many standards and skills in a fun way.}
Let’s dive into this idea for There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Clover.
One of my small groups plays this reading comprehension game {with a game board, questions, and answer key.} Honestly, my little wonderful RUN to this stop during daily 5. If a student is absent, my students who already played will beg to play it with them when they return. For word work, we complete this sequencing sheet.
Since these sequencing cards are displayed in the room, completing this sequencing sheet for word work is easy but it is a great way to work with literature, sequencing, ordinal numbers, and vocabulary. The writing station works amazingly because the word wall supports their writing.
Although we do listen to this book for Listening to Reading, we also change it up sometimes and complete listening and following directions activities that my students adore. I like to display great listening and following directions and brag about those students.
We also read and use a small student reader to read to someone and read to ourselves.
Teachers have also told me these activities make a great Substitute Set, in case you need to be out of school soon. This fun unit is right here:
