There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bell

There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bell

There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bell Integrated Activity is loaded with learning fun. You see, it hit me today… I have to start planning for Christmas this week!  When I leave school on Friday, I have to have all Thanksgiving put away and have my lesson plans for the week we come back from the break! {Breathe… Breathe…}

There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bell Book Integration

This week, we will be using the book There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bell to guide our learning activities and standards for the week. My goal is to make the learning activities fun and relevant so my little learners want to dive in further.

Sequencing The Story

First, we read this story a few times. My little learners love to listen to it at a listening-to-reading station as well. The longer I teach, the more I see the great impact of listening comprehension on learning. The more I learn from The Science of Reading, and specifically Shifting the Balance, the more I know how critical listening to reading is for little learners. My advice is to not skip this step.

Next, we take time to sequence this story There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bell. We retell the story and put these cards in order of events. Little learners need to use prompting and support to retell the story.

Once we use the cards to retell the story, my little learners can use this sequencing sheet to order the events. It can be hard to put 20 items in order, but what a great way to include ordinal numbers into learning. We use the book for prompting and support to help

Reading Comprehension Game

My students RUN  to this activity for the book, There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bell. They adore it. And it is a great way to keep data points for MTSS folders in a FUN way. This reading comprehension game is awesome because we use reading questions from the book to move our pieces along the game. And boy do we get competitive. We can easily cover all of the reading standards in a fun game.
