Snap Words Cards and Apps

January 28, 2014 by Mary Amoson 109 Comments

Slide6

Want to make learning sight words a SNAP for those hard to reach learners?
How about those young birthday kids who just lack maturity and interest in words?
Or those ADD/ADHD or special needs students who just need something
to catch there attention or keep their attention?
I found these incredible sight word cards a few years ago
hanks to an awesome Facebook suggestion.
I fell in love with the cards because
I saw the gains my hard to reach students were making using them.
But my students fell head over heals in love
because these cards made learning FUN,
engaging, and well- it made sense to them. FINALLY.
My words can not do these cards justice, so let me SHOW them to you.
Friends, meet the best sight word cards ever created for Kinders…
Meet SnapWords.
http://www.child1st.com#oid=1003_1
 Pretty cool right?
{And if these cards got your attention, imagine the attention they will get of your students!}
Let me show you a little more about these cards.
There are two sizes, the larger card is the teacher card.
The smaller size is the pocket chart card.
Both are exactly the same, only the size is different.
http://www.child1st.com#oid=1003_1
The sight word on the front is very visual… very appealing…
very meaning for the learner to gain understanding from.
More so, the back of the card contains a motion to teach your kinesthetic learners and a language connection. My own daughter, S, really connects with the sentence.
The best part is… ALL the elements tie in to really teach the meaning of the words. http://www.child1st.com/#_l_1c
I use the front to show the words. I also teach the motion and language with that word.
Then, I flip the card over {to the back that has the word without the picture support}
and we do the motion and language again.
I use both sides and so do my learners.
Why? Because although the visual side makes the words meaningful and connects knowledge in the little learners brains, we want these students to learn to read the words with plain text as well.
These cards are truly amazing. I have purchased a set for school and at home because I have seen how amazing they are!
And just when I thought I couldn’t adore SnapWords enough, they turn up the love with an app!
Here is an image of SnapWordsA app on my iPad.
http://www.child1st.com/apps/
This app doesn’t over do it with too many sounds or visuals…
it doesn’t want to or need to!
There are 3 parts to this game, all of which use the same words!
Part 1 is the learning part {glasses icon on the screen} is like a high tech flashcard review. It goes through a set of flashcards for you. Here is a recording of the learning part.
Part 2 contains the games that use the sight words.
This is the die icon.
There are 6 games students can play to work with the sight words.
http://www.child1st.com/apps/
Part 3 is a pencil cup icon to allow these learners to take a “quiz” over the words.
Here is a video showing you what this section is like.
{It is more interactive and FUN than a normal quiz.}
 I have been using these cards with S, my just turned 5 year old daughter.
Here is some actual data for you to sink your teeth into…
I started assessing her on January 8th and the last data point was assessed on January 27th.
This is S’s progress reading the back of the cards only… no visual clues.
She started off at 7 sight words and she is now at 30 sight words.
 But, I also assessed her on knowing either the back {without the visual cues}
AND the front {with the visual cues} without any help from me.
{Once she learns the picture and makes that visual, auditory, and motion connection, she quickly learns the back of the word soon after.}
She started off knowing 20 words (7 backs only and 13 fronts) and she ended knowing 47 words (30 backs and 17 fronts.)
That is in 21 days and doing these cards about 3 times a week.
I promise to add pictures and videos of S and me using these cards soon.
{It is a snow day for us and she is at her Grandmother’s house sledding down the hill.
Snow in Georgia is more than rare, so we are taking advantage.}{I am going to take advantage of this myself and grab another list or
two of cards since S is reading everything since I started using these cards!}
{Here} is a link to their store…Happy Shopping.
SnapWords is so kind and has offered to give away one set of the teacher cards
{the larger set of the flashcards} to one lucky winner. Enter below.
a Rafflecopter giveaway
And for those who want to know which words are in which list, click the picture below or {here.}

    I am currently teaching my first year of kindergarten in a low income school district. In the beginning of the year I started using Biffytoons similar to this program but with fewer words. My students benefited greatly from the program. I could see these cards being a huge success with my students. Thanks for the opportunity!

    Wow! The results you shared from using them with your daughter are amazing. I have an almost 5 year old and would love to use them with her.

      My daughter turned 5 in the middle of this month! If your kiddo is ready, these cards are high interest and engaging and they work!

    These are awesome! I just found them on Pinterest and believe they'd definitely help with my kindergartner and later, my two year old!

    I would love list A. I'm really struggling to engage my youngest/less ready learners and this looks like it would be very motivating!

    Kit 607 would be great for all the students I see as an intervention specialist. Would love to try before recommending for bigger school-wide purchase.
