How to cover crate seats can help change the look of your classroom. As my classroom is coming together, I am putting together seating options for my students. I was given these awesome 6 black crates for my classroom.
Crate seats are a great option for me since I am lacking on storage without cabinets in my classroom.
The owner before me had home depot cut the wood inserts to fit the crates. In fact, she had a few layers of covers on these wood tops from previous years.
What You Need to Cover a Crate Seat
Here is what I did so you can do to reuse these crate seats to make them work for me. First, I gathered a staple gun and one {42 by 63 inches} panel of a solid color window curtain. {This link is a good one since you can choose from a variety of colored window curtains that work GREAT to re-purpose things. You can easily choose a curtain that will work for you.}
Thick or Thin?
I chose a thicker curtain because I wanted the color to be rich and durable, especially to cover the zebra print beneath it. I ordered two panels because I wasn’t confident I could get all the seats covered with one panel. Sure enough I really only needed one of the 42 by 63-inch panels that easily covered all 6 seats.
It is good to have extra material in case something happens to this material. A teacher HAS to match at all times!

Next, I laid out the panel upside down and spread out the seat tops. This makes sure the front side of the curtain is on the top. I wanted to make sure everything fit correctly before I made a single cut.
Now, I cut around one of the seats. This material was thick. So it took a sharp pair of scissors. Now, I stretched the material and stapled the four sides. I made several staples on each side. The corners were slightly tougher.
First I tucked the fabric together. I folded the corners. I put one staple here:
Last, I pulled the flap that is off to the side and stapled it down too. Honestly, the back side isn’t great looking… but it wasn’t beforehand either.
And once the seat top is on the crate… it looks GREAT.
I would have never thought to use a curtain; such a great idea! Much cheaper than similar fabric by the yard and durable.
