Freebie Start of the Year Reading Notes Home

June 25, 2012 By Mary Amoson 20 Comments

Here is a must do idea for Meet the Teacher. Send home a $1 book from Scholastic and one of these simple notes with each new students. This is a fun activity for families to do together the night before school starts.

Scholastic Books for $1

Each school year, I buy my new students a book to start the year off with. You can find the cheapo Scholastic books and order a class set. Look for the $1 books and try to grab them for free with Scholastic Points.

Send Home Books for Meet the Teacher

Next, I send them home with each new friend at Meet the Teacher, the day before school starts. Their homework is to read the book with their parents.
I am glad to share my ideas with you do get literature into the hands and homes of our students. (Grab more meet the teacher tips here.)

Start of the Year Note Home

Someone asked me for the start of the year notes home… but I didn’t have it made. So I got busy. You can grab all the freebie notes here. I made download for everyone with MANY different start of school books.

The Books

It includes notes for the books:

Amazon.com Widgets

This way, I hopefully have your book covered. It also allows you to use books from your library, school library, or elsewhere since you can mix and match. I also added the Amazon links in case you need to grab them from there. Try to get them through Scholastic for cheaper though!

I went through the list you guys gave me before on books you use at the start of the year…. did I miss any I should add to the pack?

Here is the set up for each new student when they enter my classroom at Meet the Teacher.

On the First Day of Kindergarten Note Home

I printed many of the notes onto one page using my printer setting so I could make them smaller. Check out how the start of the year notes home look.

These are so cute! I love the "Night Before…" series by Natasha Wing! But I didn't know if you knew, in the download the note for "The Night Before First Grade" says "The Night Before Kindergarten" down with the author's name. Sorry if you already knew this and had fixed it! Thank you again for a great freebie!! 🙂
