Center Saturday

February 9, 2013 by Mary Amoson 2 Comments

Welcome to Center Saturday!
This week we are learned about the /sh/ sound, -and family, and Space!
Here are our weekly work centers.
Yellow- Math- We did a tens and ones matching game I named Tommy Says Teens. Student matched the teen numbers and their tricky numbers, like 18 and 81, to the set of tens and ones. This is one game in my Valentine Math Activities Pack.
Orange- Writing- We did a Write Me three about The Sun. I gave them the starter “The Sun…”  My students are becoming amazing writers thanks to these organizers. I loved that they had to write the verb in the box this time too. Some wrote “The Sun is…” and some wrote “The Sun can…” and still others wrote “The Sun looks…” I also think the key to these is to use them often, so your students know how to use the organizer to aid them.
Red- Reading- We did these Spaced Out Sentence Scrambles. My kids LOVE these and make me so proud with their results. I love to see them work through longer sentences as well. It is a great way to practice reading skills, sentence structure, and sentences that make sense.
Purple- Phonics- We sorted /th/ and /sh/ sounds. This came from The Mailbox All Sorts of Sorts book that I LOVE and highly recommend.
Blue- Unit- We made the first page of our Space Book based on The Sun. We made a Sun and wrote a fact about the Sun. We wrote “The Sun is a star.” You can find the whole book and Space ideas here.
Green- Unit- We sorted day and night pictures to review our lights and shadows unit from last week.
I hope these ideas and centers give you a few FUN ideas for learning in your room!

    Hi Mary,

I think the hands-on learning centers are so important for our young learners. These activities look great. I especially love the day/night sorting activity. Thanks so much for sharing your ideas.

I really like your sorting centers. I find the kids respond enthusiastically to all sorting activities. Keeping those little hands (and minds) busy is so valuable.
