Sight Word Stations

My kids are FINALLY interacting with sight words the way they NEED to be, the way they learn, the way they apply reading.

And the best part is, this pack gives me minimal prep time! And please know, I couldn’t even use all the stations from each week even if I wanted to. Each week has 14 stations, I used 7 this week! I am giving you too much… but in a good way.

I like having too many options so I can change out my stations for the needs of my student, incorporate sight words in other areas of my classroom like morning work or daily 5, or to keep interest. If I am tired of prepping and seeing an activity… I bet my kids are tired of DOING that activity!}

Here is How We Do Sight Word Stations:

I start off the week by going over the new sight words with my class on calendar. We say the words and talk about them. Next, we find little words, word families, or silent letters. Then, we talk about whether we can sound it out or not. Additionally, we use it in a sentence. We practice spelling it out.

THEN we have fun… We go to our self-selected stations. All my centers, stations, and choices are self-selected, but you can designate where to send students if you choose.

Here is Read, Build, Write

Read, Build, Write to learn sight words
Students read the word on the left. They cut out the letters at the bottom and glue them to the middle column to make the words, then they write the words in the last column. This is a harder station, but it is also awesome for those smarter kids and for working with words during Daily 5 or Guided Reading.

And Rainbow Words ~ Watercolors

watercolor sight words
Students use watercolors to make the words. I ask them to say the letters as they paint them and read the word at the end.

Build a Word~ Dry Erase Marker

You could easily be letter tiles, beads, or other manipulatives,

 Flip and Write

flip and write station

You are supposed to flip the circles and WRITE these words in the box, not color the box…
But you can play it this way as well if you need differentiation.

Here is Roll the Word

roll the word
This is a whole table game. There are two die options. I include a pre-made die and these types of inserts. Students roll the die and read the word. The table mates can help. Then, they write that word on the graph. They can use pencils or crayons. The first word to the top WINS.

Here is a sensory table with the table tent showing.

I know you are going to ask what these boards are… they are pretty cool! You can check them out here!
Here is the travel pack that I am using here and here is the large mat here. {I got mine at Walmart for a cheaper price though!}

Here is the Magnet Word Station.

magnetic word station
Students use magnets to build the words. We work at these stations for 10-20 minutes at least 3 times a week, sometimes 4. This gives my kids a chance to go to at least 3-4 stations a week minimum. Is each student doing each activity perfectly? Nope! Are they doing them independently? Absolutely.

And I am listening for them to be working with the words. After all, that is the goal, not making the graph perfect.

I love hearing them working at their tables and asking another student for help with a word when they need it. I love hearing them spell out each word as they write it or build it. I LOVE hearing them laugh and giggle when they go to a station they are so excited about.

Lastly, when I assessed my kids on sight words, almost all of my kids knew the words we are working on! Honestly, we are never going to get 100% from all our students, but every kid in my class learned at least 1 new word, many of them learned 3-5, and more than half learned all 6!

  1. I love the variety of activities, the independence these activities foster, and the easy setup. Wow what a difference this will make with learning sight words!

  2. I LOVE the Rainbow Words! We NEVER get to do anything creative any more! My kiddoes need to learn 100 words by the end of Kinder, not including colors and number words. These centers are FANTASTIC!

  3. These look awesome and I love that they only take a few minutes to complete. I sure hope I win, as this is my first year in kindergarten and I only get my kids for half a day I really need something for them to do independently. Thanks!!!

  4. I love that these centers all work on sight words in different, exciting ways. This will help the students continue to learn without getting bored. 🙂

  5. I have been struggling to find fun, engaging and meaningful ways to help my students learn sight words! They are so tired of doing the same thing so this would be the answer to my worries!! I love this set!

  6. Oh my word, this is amazing!!!!! My kids love doing station work and this would be fabulous to have! I would love to win this! Thank you for all your hard work in creating meaningful activities for kids across the country! 🙂

  7. I am the kindergarten Title I teacher at our school, working with the kiddos who struggle to read sight words as well as other reading readiness skills. I do a lot of different activities for the sight words, and they can't remember the words and/or get them mixed up. I find the students can work independently on the words, but if you aren't there with them saying the words, they won't learn what the word is. For example, they can make the words with magnet letters and write the words neatly, but they don't know what the words are. Last week I had them unscramble letters to make their sight words, and they could do that since they recognized the words, but several students were unable to read the words to me. With my time constraints, I'm lucky if I get to sight words. I do flashcards everyday as a review of them. Any suggestions on how to get the words to "stick"?

    1. Free choice is key! I allow them to chose where they want to go. If they are working with the words, I am good with that. My girls love to water color but my boys like to flip and write. If they choose their area they are more invested. And you have a variety of activities it helps!

  8. These are wonderful!! Any chance you would make a blank copy of each activity so we could add our own words? I have certain words I have to teach each week!! I love the activities and how they are independent for the students to do. Great job!!

  12. I love that you can use these centers at any time. They would be great for centers or for guided reading groups and would be fantastic for intervention groups!

  13. I LOVE that these stations are mostly tactile and stray from the ol' "worksheet" that all of us hate to see on our walkthroughs/evals. Great variety of choices for students!

  14. Where's the differentiation???? That's what we always hear …. You've got it spot on! Love all the activities but really love the rainbow write with watercolors Why have I never thought of that? Kids love to paint and it keeps them quiet and focused. Great job on another product that teachers and can use and save prep time with. Would love to win~kimchaiken@gmail.com
