Alice the Fairy David Shannon Author Study

Alice the Fairy is a spectacular book by David Shannon that your class will fall in love with. As our David Shannon Author Study moved focus to the importance of illustrations today, we use the book Alice the Fairy. I can’t wait for you to see why!

Alice the Fairy

I read the book Alice the Fairy to my class. But, I didn’t let them look at the pictures. I asked them to lay out on the carpet and keep their eyes closed. I also cover the cover of the book so they get no frame of reference to the book, they can only listen to the words.

Here is a picture of what this may look like in your classroom. Of course, I had to give you an image that didn’t show students’ faces! Then, we draw a picture to show what we IMAGINE Alice looks like using the words they heard and the images in their minds.

Now, We Read Alice the Fairy Again

Next, I read Alice the Fairy to my class again but this time I show them the illustrations. This changes everything! We discover that Alice isn’t really a fairy at all. Alice is just a girl who plays pretend. Now, we return to our papers and draw another image of what the illustrations SHOW us what Alice looks like:

Reading Comprehension Game

We also played the reading comprehension game to review all those common core skills that my kids RUN to and ask to play over and over again!

 Alice the Fairy Art Project

Our day can’t be complete without making Alice. Check out her shoes and crown!!! LOVE. My class asked for a crown for her… how can I say no to that? I redid the patterns for Alice and uploaded the changes into the Art Projects file for you guys. In fact, I redid ALL the templates for the art projects to make them printer-friendly and more efficient for you guys.

The Before and After Pictures

Here are some of my students’ examples of their completed pages for the Author Study book they are creating. Remember that the left side is what they imagine Alice is like and the right is what Alice looks like.
