Each December, we love teaching Wants and Needs Activities for Kindergarten with Printables. Kindergarten students naturally enjoy discussing the things they wantโlike a new toy or ice creamโespecially during the holiday season. However, itโs just as important to introduce them to human needs, such as food, shelter, and clothing. This unit fosters critical thinking skills while also building financial literacy and social skills in a fun and age-appropriate way.
Wants and Needs Activities for Kindergarten with Printables
Thematic units like this tie into social studies while giving students the chance to compare and contrast their own daily experiences. The activities are easy to adapt for other grades, making them a flexible option for a range of classrooms, including special education and speech therapy groups.
Pocket Chart Sorting Activities: Wants vs. Needs

One of the most engaging ways to start is with a wants vs needs pocket chart sorting activity. Students can place picture cards of items like candy, junk food, or video games into the โwantsโ category and items like water, food, and shelter into the โneedsโ category.
Youโll quickly see some surprises! Many students may insist that ice cream is a needโbut this opens the door to rich classroom discussions that strengthen social emotional learning and critical thinking skills.
This activity can be done as a whole-group lesson, in small groups, or even independently with task cards.
Charting Wants and Needs
Creating a wants and needs chart is another effective way to promote deeper learning. As you work through real-life examples, try asking:
- โDo we need junk food to live?โ
- โWhy are human needs like shelter and clothing essential?โ
Charts are also a great place to integrate visual arts or graphic arts, encouraging students to draw or design their own wants and needs. If youโre tech-friendly, you can even extend the activity using Google Slides.

Printables and Packets
A comprehensive worksheet pack saves time while reinforcing concepts. Thatโs why I created this Wants and Needs Kindergarten and First Grade Social Studies resource, available here:
๐ Wants and Needs: Kindergarten & 1st Grade Social Studies
This 30-page PDF file includes:
- 6 charts to teach Wants vs. Needs (completed & blank) with matching student printables.
- Writing prompts & a Word Wall.
- Large sorting headers and 12 sorting cards for each categoryโperfect for pocket chart use.
- Cut-and-sort printables with guiding questions (e.g., โDoes it keep me healthy?โ โCould I give it as a gift?โ).
- ABC order worksheets and syllable sorting activities.

Teachers love how this packet saves prep time while engaging students. Itโs adaptable for first graders, 2nd grade, and even special education or occupational therapy groups. The activities hit multiple skills at onceโreading, writing, sorting, and social studiesโmaking it a cross-curricular win.

On the worksheet, you have a 'yes' on the wants side and a 'no' on the needs side. Is there a reason for those two words?
I remember there was a reason I put them there, but now I can't recall! CRAZY…
I took them out. How does that sound?
haha
This is fantastic! Most of our social studies standards are reflecting holidays around the world. This gives us a new area of focus! Thank you.
Thank you for sharing!
Every time I go to download the “freebie,” it says it costs $4.00
Follow the directions and download the PREVIEW as the picture shows. You will get the freebie file.
Can you email me the freebie? My school computer will not allow this download format because it has to install a program our district does not support on our computers. This would be great for my kindergarten class to practice sorting wants and needs.
This file is a PDF and does not require any programs or such to download it. If I emailed you the file, it would be the EXACT same PDF file. I do not send out specific emails for such things as that is horribly time consuming. The goal is for you to easy and quickly grab the freebie file. Follow the directions and you should easily be able to snag this freebie. ๐ I double checked it myself.
Fun activities!
Thank you for the freebie! Is going to work great with my kdg girl scout troop!
