Each December I teach a unit to my Kinders on Wants and Needs.
Since we discuss thing we WANT to get from Santa,
it is so important for our little learners to understand
how blessed they are to have so many things that they NEED already.
We do a pocket chart sorting activity to put things we WANT and NEED.
And yes… I have a freebie for you… keep reading.
And yes… I have a freebie for you… keep reading.
This is always FUN to see they things
they THINK they NEED and
the things they THINK they want.
This gives me a look into their brains as to what they are thinking.
Next, we work on a chart for things we want and need.
Then we use the pocket chart pieces again.
This time we KNOW the things we want and the things we need.
Since there are so many printables,
it is easy to match up an activity to what your students need to work on.
And let’s not forget we still teach reading and ELA skills while we are using themes,
like Wants and Needs.
{These are the types of activities I use to guide instruction during Daily 5 time.}
One sheet is just basic Wants and Needs,
but… I included other sheets:
another is what makes a good gift,
things we do everyday,
and things that are healthy to eat and not to eat.
Good thing I included 3 ABC printable sheets you can use to practice ABC order.
We also use this theme to clap out our syllables.
This week, we completed the WANTS syllable clapping and sorting.
As a follow up, we completed these sheets.
There are two versions of this in the pack.
We will be doing the NEEDS version this upcoming week.
Here is a look at the syllable sorts and printables.
We also worked on reading and completed our Wants and Needs Reader.
These activities, except with the reader, are part of this unit.
Although I use it at Christmas, it is not Christmas themed.

And these are some FUN and FREE ways to share the magic with your little learners.
On the worksheet, you have a 'yes' on the wants side and a 'no' on the needs side. Is there a reason for those two words?
I remember there was a reason I put them there, but now I can't recall! CRAZY…
I took them out. How does that sound?
haha
This is fantastic! Most of our social studies standards are reflecting holidays around the world. This gives us a new area of focus! Thank you.
Thank you for sharing!
Every time I go to download the “freebie,” it says it costs $4.00
Follow the directions and download the PREVIEW as the picture shows. You will get the freebie file.
Can you email me the freebie? My school computer will not allow this download format because it has to install a program our district does not support on our computers. This would be great for my kindergarten class to practice sorting wants and needs.
This file is a PDF and does not require any programs or such to download it. If I emailed you the file, it would be the EXACT same PDF file. I do not send out specific emails for such things as that is horribly time consuming. The goal is for you to easy and quickly grab the freebie file. Follow the directions and you should easily be able to snag this freebie. 🙂 I double checked it myself.
Fun activities!
Thank you for the freebie! Is going to work great with my kdg girl scout troop!
