First, we will use the essential question on Monday to cover What is Earth Day? To help guide our thinking, I love to use the Rookie Reader Earth Day. I like using this book since many Kinders have never heard of Earth Day and most likely need a jumping off point.

Then, we will be using these to making a chart about What is Earth Day? Then, we will relate this topic to ourselves while we ask what we can do for the Earth.

Next, I can use the smaller version on our pocket chart. I like to have a version in the eye sight of my students, not on a computer which may or may not be on at that moment. Then we will practice this using the Good for the Earth sort then elaborate with our writing as well as practice what we know.

How Can We Help the Earth?

Tuesday will cover the question How can we Help the Earth? I will use this book called Earth Day Every Day. Just because we are learning about Earth Day doesn’t mean that we just worry about Earth Day once a year. Instead, Earth Day can be everyday!

Then, we discuss how can we help the earth with examples. Some simple ideas on how we can help the Earth include ideas of reuse, recycle, and reduce. These words can be BIG WORDS for little learners.

Next, here is the pocket chart version of our Earth Day for Kindergarten. We focus on the words reduce, reuse, and recycle. I really like the idea of breaking apart the Re words so my little loves can see the prefix as well as base word.

Discussions are the key to this Earth Day Lesson Plans. What does the word “reduce” or “reuse” ore “recycle” mean and how can we apply the topics to ourselves. We can reduce using bottles of water by using cups. But we can also recycle the bottle of water we do use. This Earth Day printable is a great tool.

We use this writing prompt over several days. There are tons of cut and glue images my students will choose from to put on their sheets for reduce, reuse, and recycle.

What Can We Reduce?

What can we reduce?

Wednesday is the topic of reducing. Then they can tell me why. I love to have then tell me WHY. Wednesday we will be breaking down the word REDUCE, using the question, What can we reduce?

Earth Day puzzles

Then, we can use these two sided puzzles to see ways we can use less of things we need to conserve, like paper, water, gas, and energy. Students match the two sides to see ways to reduce. I like to throw in the word conserve as well.

Here is the pocket chart, showing only a few of the ways to conserve.

Here is a great Earth Day printable that will be perfect to show ways you can and can not reduce.

What Can We Reuse?

Thursday is dedicated to the question, What can we Reuse? We reuse lots of things all the time so we have to wrap our brains around how we can reuse things to help our environment. One of the big ideas I like to bring up giving away our old things.

Moreso, we look up donations centers in our area. I also plan to have my students help our school collect the old coats and jackets that can’t find homes for the donation center to pic up.

What Can We Recycle?

Friday, we will cover recycling, using the question, What can we recycle?
I am going to use this book, The Adventures of a Plastic Bottle.

This idea is very easy for most students because they see the school recycle all the time. Recycling is a more ingrained part of many of our lives, and we want to keep it that way. Additionally, I know many places require recycling.

ways to recycle puzzles

Here are the two sided puzzles that will show us examples of recycling.

Then, we can break down what we recycle into groups. What a great way to use the skill of sorting.

Paper, Class, Paper? oh my

Here is our sorting Earth Day activity I know your students will love. I am considering making this our science center this week. Here is a FUN Earth Day printable recycling activity. I also made a recycling and compost sort.
