Bad Case of Stripes Activities: Welcome, kindergarten teachers! Today, we’re going to delve into the enchanting world of children’s literature and explore one of the most beloved stories for young learners: “A Bad Case of Stripes” by David Shannon. This whimsical tale not only entertains but also offers valuable lessons about self-acceptance and embracing one’s uniqueness. In this blog post, we will share a collection of engaging learning activities inspired by this heartwarming book. Let’s dive in into a Bad Case of the Stripes Activities.
A Bad Case of Stripes
Who loves “A Bad Case of Stripes” by David Shannon? I am a HUGE David Shannon fan. He is my all-time FAVORITE author and illustrator. Each school year, I end the year with an author study featuring David Shannon. Additionally, I LOVE Camilla Cream and her stripes. This step of the author’s study has us focusing on three events in the book. We watch the video of this story on Storyline Online and then work on Bad Case of Stripes Activities.
Storytelling and Comprehension:
To kickstart the exploration, gather your students in a cozy circle and read aloud “A Bad Case of Stripes.” Encourage them to participate actively by predicting the story’s events, discussing the characters’ emotions, and asking questions along the way. Afterward, initiate a class discussion to reinforce comprehension and understanding.
Character Analysis:
The characters in the book, particularly the protagonist, Camilla Cream, offer rich opportunities for character analysis. Divide the class into small groups and assign each group a different character from the story. Encourage students to discuss and share their thoughts about the characters’ personalities, traits, and motivations. They can create character webs, draw pictures, or even act out short skits to deepen their understanding.
Making Writing Connections
We start with the FIRST event in the story, then we move on to the LAST event. Once we have the first and last event we fill in the middle event.
I encourage my students to write their sentences. Here is one of my friend’s work. “She is colorful. She is very sick. She is normal.”
They can also choose to draw sentences and illustrations. “She had stripes. She wants to be fixed. She is sick.”
Once we write down all three events, we color the circle of the MAIN EVENT. The class favorite is always the ART. Art projects bring the magic alive. And I recently updated this art product for a new and CUTE Camila Cream.
We decided to start with our blank Camila’s face. My students got to pick whether they wanted their Camila to have stripes or not. I always find it interesting that students like to color the stripes and which ones do not like to color the stripes. And some students can not choose to change their faces in and out.
Here we are working on the carpet picking our Camila options. I left the sheets together just because some of my students wanted to make BOTH options.
After some fun snipping and gluing… here are our Camila Cream works of art… with and without stripes. Honestly, this art project just makes me happy.
