Teaching Blends to Kindergarten and First Grade: If you’re looking for a hands-on and engaging way to begin teaching blends in kindergarten and teaching blends to first grade, I’ve got a fun and affordable activity for you to use in your classroom after your learners master CVC words! This playful decoding game focuses on r-blends and uses frog containers from Target to make learning interactive and enjoyable. It’s a great way to reinforce phonemic awareness skills, individual sounds, and letter sounds while providing meaningful practice for kindergarten students and first grade learners.

Frog Container Blends Activity
I recently found these adorable frog containers at Target in their seasonal section—just $1 for a pack of four! Each pack includes a yellow, green, blue, and purple frog. I grabbed 10 containers to create four color-coded games, one for each frog color. This simple setup brings a splash of fun while teaching blends in kindergarten and teaching blends to first grade, helping students practice initial r blends, consonant blends, and final blends.
You can grab these containers here.

Here’s how to set up and use the frog container blends activity in your classroom:
- Game Setup:
- Place blend pieces inside each frog container and label the outside to match the image. You can see my images to help guide the prep.
- Assign each frog a specific color-coded game.
- Provide students with the appropriate response sheet based on their skill level.
- How to Play:
- Students choose a frog container and pull out a blend of the word on the outside of the frog.
- Next, they find the answer portion on the answer key and complete the corresponding activity on their response sheet. #2 frog matches the #2 section on the answer sheet.
- Prepare the Materials:
- Frog containers (1 color per game)
- Blend cards focusing on r-blends (e.g., br-, cr-, dr-, fr-, gr-, pr-, tr-)
- Response sheets (three levels provided)

Differentiated Response Sheets to Teach Blends in Kindergarten and First Grade
To support diverse learning needs, this activity includes three levels of response sheets:
- Level 1: Identify the image only (perfect for beginners and little learners). Students color in the matching word on their answer sheet.
- Level 2: Write the new word and match it to the color in the correct image.
- Level 3: Write the whole word independently (ideal for advanced learners in first grade and 2nd grade).
These differentiated sheets make teaching blends to kindergarten and teaching blends to first grade easier by allowing you to meet students where they are while providing opportunities for independent work and independent practice.

Why This Activity Works
- Hands-On Learning: Manipulating the frog containers adds an element of surprise and excitement while reinforcing individual letters and separate sounds.
- Differentiation: The three response levels ensure that every student can participate and succeed, from kindergarten students to 1st grade and even second-grade students.
- Affordable and Accessible: With a total cost of $2.50 per game, you can create an engaging learning experience without breaking the bank.
- Supports a Phonics Program: This activity aligns with any phonics program by providing explicit instruction and phonemic awareness activities.

Tips for Success
- Use the frog containers in small groups, independent practice, or phonics activities.
- Rotate the containers weekly to keep the activity fresh and engaging.
- Reinforce learning by encouraging students to say the consonant sound aloud as they decode.
- Incorporate Elkonin boxes or sound boxes to help students visualize individual sound-spellings.
By incorporating this frog container game into your lesson plans, teaching blends to kindergarten and teaching blends to first grade becomes more interactive and fun. Plus, the playful nature of the activity helps young students stay motivated and excited about practicing r blends, l blends, and s blends.

Extend the Learning
- Use letter cards and clip cards for additional phonological awareness practice. I recommend Heggery for Phonemic Awareness
- Introduce decodable texts and decodable books to apply phonics patterns in context. You can see my phonics integration packs with blends here.
- Implement sound walls to reinforce consonant clusters and consonant digraphs.
- Encourage oral practice through oral blending and segmenting games.
