Each December, we teach the wants and needs Kindergarten unit. Since little learners love to discuss things they WANT to get from Santa, it is so important for our little learners to understand how blessed they are to have so many things that they NEED already. Let’s break down how you can tie in their interest into content and understanding.
Wants and Needs Kindergarten Lesson
Let’s break down the charts, pocket chart sorts, printables, and more in this Wants and Needs Kindergarten Lesson. These can be what you are looking for if you need a wants and needs kindergarten worksheet and even needs and wants lesson plan grade 1.
Wants & Needs Pocket Chart Sorts
We do a pocket chart sorting activity to put things we WANT and NEED. And yes, I have a freebie for you if you keep reading. This is always FUN to see the things they THINK they NEED and the things they THINK they want. The concept of what kids need always varies, but it is rarely accurate. This is typically a great time to define what wants and needs are in reality.
Charting Wants & Needs
Next, we work on a chart for things we want and need. What do we need? Why do we need it? For example, we like candy but do we need it to live? This is a great time for a class discussion.
Wants & Needs Printables
Don’t worry about needing fast, content-driven printables to cover wants and needs. We have several options to allow you to easily cover this topic. This makes it a way to match up activities to what your students need to build skills with. Plus, we can still integrate reading skills while we are using a theme.
Skill Building Examples
Here is an example using ABC ordering. These printables allow you to work on the theme at hand and put words in ABC order. Then, another example is this syllable sorting learning activity for this Wants and Needs Kindergarten Lesson.

On the worksheet, you have a 'yes' on the wants side and a 'no' on the needs side. Is there a reason for those two words?
I remember there was a reason I put them there, but now I can't recall! CRAZY…
I took them out. How does that sound?
haha
This is fantastic! Most of our social studies standards are reflecting holidays around the world. This gives us a new area of focus! Thank you.
Thank you for sharing!
Every time I go to download the “freebie,” it says it costs $4.00
Follow the directions and download the PREVIEW as the picture shows. You will get the freebie file.
Can you email me the freebie? My school computer will not allow this download format because it has to install a program our district does not support on our computers. This would be great for my kindergarten class to practice sorting wants and needs.
This file is a PDF and does not require any programs or such to download it. If I emailed you the file, it would be the EXACT same PDF file. I do not send out specific emails for such things as that is horribly time consuming. The goal is for you to easy and quickly grab the freebie file. Follow the directions and you should easily be able to snag this freebie. 🙂 I double checked it myself.
Fun activities!
Thank you for the freebie! Is going to work great with my kdg girl scout troop!
