Old Lady Who Swallowed a Rose Freebie

January 9, 2013 by Mary Amoson 15 Comments

There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Rose Activities
Check out this teacher’s favorite book, There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Rose book by Lucille Colandro. And because so many of you guys have asked for an Old Lady Rose sequencing sheet. Keep reading to check out some learning activities using this book.

Grab the Book Old Lady Who Swallowed a Rose

First, check out this awesome book that is a hit with little learners, There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Rose!  In fact, this book is so amazing and FUN, I had to make a whole pack dedicated to learning fun using this book. One of my favorite features of this book has to be the use of rhyming words.

Old Lady Rose Sequencing Cards

Sequencing Fun

Teachers love these books for many reasons and one great idea is to use the book, Old Lady Who Swallowed a Rose, to practice sequencing. After reading the book, try using these sequencing cards to put the events in order. Once we work on sequencing the book using the cards, my students can use this sequencing sheet to put the events in order on their own.
Sequencing Sheet is always a hit!!!
And guess what I have for your for free!!! The sequencing sheet.
A classroom favorite... reading comprehension game.

Reading Comprehension Game

Next, your students will love this reading comprehension game board and cards. My students RUN to this activity and beg to play more. Little do they know they are working on tons of actual Kindergarten reading standards but in a fun way. This is also a sneaky and practical way to assess reading comprehension skills. You get the game board, reading comprehension cards, and answer key.

Math integration with Fill the Ten Frame

Math Old Lady Rose Integration Activity

One big way to make a learning impact on students is pure integration. You will want to play this ten-frame game my little loves are OBSESSED with, called Fill the Ten Frame. Here is how my little loves play. First, a student rolls the die. You can use a foam die like I have or a printable die taped together. Then, students color in one box for the item that is on the top of the die, until one ten-frame is filled. This game builds great one-to-one correspondence and number sense. Plus, it is amazing fun for your students.

Writing Fun with Word Walls, Write Me Three, and Writing prompts

Old Lady Rose Writing Too

Speaking of integration, this means writing too! I also created a Write Me Three prompt and word wall to encourage independent writing. This is a basic tool I use to get my younger students ready to write about a few things using simple sentences.

Writing Integration

When we are ready to write more, we turn to a word wall to help us. Check out these writers using their word wall to write to retell the story.  My favorite part is “she blue” instead of “she blew.”

Old Lady Rose Word Wall

Word walls can be such a great tool because students can focus on what they are writing and not on every little word from the book, Old Lady Who Swallowed a Rose.
