Sorting FUN!

October 17, 2012 by Mary Amoson 1 Comment

Sorting FUNSorting is a great skill to teach kinders as well as any student. It is always a usable and fun way to see who knows what. Let’s talk about ways to make sorting FUN.

One of my favorite ways to let my students practice sorting is to use wooden craft shapes.

(I usually get these on clearance at an art supply store.)

I put various tubs out on my tables and ask my students to sort.
I like to see how they are going to sort- color, shape, size.
Once each table has sorted the wooden pieces one way in front of them,
I ask them to sort them a different way.
For example, if a table sorts my transportation pieces by color, then they can sort their color pieces by type or size.
If you have trouble finding the wooden shapes, don’t give up! You can find of plenty of fun math counters which make great sorting tools.
Here are some fun transportation counters we are sorting by type.

I hope this is a helpful tip for your own classroom!

Thanks for the tip about the wooden craft shapes. I use bags of foam pieces- I will be adding wooden craft shapes to my manipulatives.
