Pattern Idea

August 20, 2012 by Mary Amoson 9 Comments

Patterns

My students create patterns ALL the time. But I like to connect the idea of a pattern to something concrete and real for these little learners. Here is one pattern idea for Brown Bear book that works great for the beginning of the school year.
Copy animals onto the right color paper, referring to the Brown Bear book. Have the pieces ready to go so assembly goes smoothly.
I recently brought one of my dip trays at the dollar store(I guess that is what you call it?)ย to school for another activity.
BUT… I saw it while I was prepping centers.ย AND IT WORKED PERFECTLY!

We use sentence strip to hold the patterns. My students did so well at this center.
Clean up was even easier!
I highly recommend trying this the next time you make patterns with your kids.

We used this bookย Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See?ย ย by Bill Martin Jr.

I look these Brown Bear inspired pattern pieces (in this bundle you can see the Brown Bear Patterns.
I copied them onto the correct colored copy paper and had them precut in the tray.

Check out how easy it is for the students to USE.

Okay, now help me out.
WHAT IS THIS TRAY THING CALLED?

Love that idea! And I agree – isn't it just a veggie/dip tray? Maybe there's a real name for it though – just like the tip of a shoelace is called an aglet lol!

I just found some in the clearance section of Wal Mart for $1 – I bought 2, but now I think I need more! Thanks for the idea! ๐Ÿ™‚

Great idea, can’t wait to try it. I see your glue bottles and I have to tell you, after 30 years of teaching and being frustrated with every type of glue bottle and glue stick, glue sponges are the way to go. Google it, it is amazing and you can find the sponges and containers at a dollar store.
Thank you for all your wonderful ideas.

Glue sponges are NOT for me! They don’t work with our supply bins and I really want my kids to learn how to open and close glue bottles, as well as use a dot at a time. I know it isn’t always easy for fun, but long term… I prefer glue bottles.
