My Little Girl is Ready2Read!

March 26, 2013 by Mary Amoson 4 Comments

I have many jobs through the day and I love them all! My favorite job is the role of mommy!
I have an amazing little girl, S, who is my absolute pride. (I can say that because you looks and acts nothing like me! She is 100% Daddy!)
Like most mom’s and children, we do homework together often. We don’t do it everyday, but most days we spend a few minutes together learning. Sometimes this is structures and planned, but like most learning… we go with what S wants to talk about or learn. ( Like making words in the bathtub or making patterns with Legos.)
S is starting to ask me important questions like “What word is this, mommy?” and “How to I spell cat?” I know she is ready to read. I have been holding off teaching her until I knew her interest was sparked… and here we are.
I asked around to find out where I needed to start with a 4 year old who will be in preK in a few months, but just can’t wait any longer to learn to read…
Everyone I know said one name… Annie Moffatt!
She home schools her two little girls and sells the Ready2Read units they use at home.
I got Unit 1 to try out for S… here was day 1 of the scope and sequence…
 S did great! She got the concept of the word family and is ON FIRE with -at family words. She also loves to color, so the color by number sight word cards were perfect for her. And she has been sleeping with her -at family reader for almost a week now. (Literally, it is in the bed with her every night.)
We are not rushing through the unit, just taking our time. Today, S completed this activity ON HER OWN! She didn’t need any help from me {tear… don’t grow up too fast! I still need you!!!}
  I told her we have a new reader we get to look at tomorrow and she is pumped. I can’t wait to see what she thinks of this one.
So far this pack has been a HUGE success for us and the lessons are VERY do-able for any mom. You can go at the pace set in unit, or take it as slow as you want. The activities are every fun and developmentally appropriate.  Additionally… THEY ARE A HUGE value. I can’t buy homework materials for cheaper than this unit costs to buy and prep is minimal. I highly recommend this unit for other moms out there.
I think this unit would work GREAT in a collaborative classroom with little learners who just didn’t grasp the reading concept the first time around or who came into the year late.
And lastly… just so I don’t forget to share the family news…
We have another little blessing on the way.
S told us for over a year that God said she was going to have a baby sister… and she was right!
We are overjoyed and excited, but S is most thrilled. She is so excited to be getting a baby sister.

    The Issy Books would be a great first set of books for her! Mattie and Miss Rat is based on the -at word family.
