Teaching Motion to Kindergarten: I looked back on one of the first units I created, Force and Motion Unit. I made it many years ago and it is still one of the most popular items in my store. I credit it to the fact that this topic is just so hard to teach and the teacher needs some tools in their tool belt to make this unit FUN, MEANINGFUL, and EDUCATIONAL. And teachers need movement lesson plans and fun ways to help teaching motion to kindergarten.
Teaching Motion to Kindergarten
My initial idea with this unit was to write motion lesson plans for kindergarten in addition to just push and pull activities. This was to allow any teacher to follow and create a great week of learning. But, that was over TWO years ago, and like I started this post by saying I am changing and so did this unit.
It NEEDED a big overhaul. First, I read every bit of feedback I get on units. You guys asked me for a book list, so I made it happen. But not without discovering some new motion books to add to it.
Motion Book List
I also wanted to make this unit more than just lesson plans. I think you guys needed some printables to check for learning and show skills being covered. I updated the charts being used to create some student fill-in options. It is critical to read both fiction and nonfiction options whenever possible. Good, relevant books can help drive a lesson into meaningful learning and help teach force and motion better than ever.
Real Images for Motion and Verbs
I added verb cards and pictures of push and pull. This is only a picture of some of the verb cards. The pushes and pulls cards are separate and I didn’t want you guys to get confused. This pack has two image options. The first are the graphics from the original as well as these new motion cards that contain real images as shown above.
Teaching motion to Kindergarten with Hands-On Activities
Many times while teaching movement lesson plans in kindergarten, we have to show a concrete example of learning based on an abstract idea like force, motion, and gravity. One way to do this is with a great and FUN hands-on approach!
One activity is experimenting with gravity by making ramps and testing to see how this falls or slides. We use clipboards and baskets as well as standard classroom materials.
Lastly, I added some additional optional activities and STEM ideas you can try to help while teaching motion to Kindergarten such as this Pinwheel activity. My students LOVE this one and we love to take them outside to test them out. I know you will love this movement lesson plans kindergarten to help your classroom with learning.
