I love working with my kinders this time of year. They are reading everything… and I mean everything. I looked around the room at Daily 5 today and I almost cried… it is crazy how much they know.
Can I brag??? I have 3 kids that know almost 400 fry sight words. And some of those words are super hard! America, oil, certain… those are some of the words they know!
I keep instant data on my kids using their sight word booklets. I use different color markers to keep track of what they know and when. If I have to use this info in an RTI chart, it is ready. Additionally, I can see their gains over periods of time. This helps when I set them sight word goals.
I have a sight word system that works great for me. I have a basket I use for assessments. This is what it looks like and everything that is in it.
I use the index cards to make flashcards to send home or to put in book boxes. I also have fun stickers that we use on a chart by a treasure chest. If my kids learn 20 words on a list, they get to add a sticker to the chart and get a treasure from the chest. I also keep a list for JUST ME in this basket. They have their own at home and in their book baskets for Daily 5.
I also keep these sight word packs handy. When a students needs help with a particular word, I pull out the worksheet they need from these packs to help them. They love it.

I print out the cards to send home with parents. I use the worksheets in the classroom. I also use the sensory cards during our hands on phonics time. They also work great at center time.
If you need the other lists, you can grab them here as well.
Next year, we are starting with the Dolch words and then moving on to the Fry words.
{I better start working on that pack!}
What word list do you follow? What words do your students really struggle with?
Leave me some comments below and I will give away a few of the List 3 pack this weekend!

We actually only have to do the sight words from the curriculum we use-Scott Foresman Reading Street, so technically it's only about 40 words or so (we add 8 color words as well) although I try to teach them many more sight words as well. Reading all this really encourages me to also add either the Dolch or Fry Word Lists to what I teach the kids next year. Thanks for sharing it all! Make it a great day!

I hope you do add some new words to your list. The kids LOVE the independence reading gives them.
Just got my email! Thank you so much! I cannot wait to put the packet to good use with next years class. I really appreciate it! Thanks again, make it a great summer!
Thanks for sharing your sight words. I'd like to know more about how you implement your word checks during your day. When do you find time to do it? Our kindergarten uses the word list with the reading series which is only 33 words. As the Title I teacher for kindergarten, I check the sight words every Friday with a word ring. My kiddos struggle with words: said, what, this, was, and mix up the/like, this/it, and am/my, and often they will know the words and then suddenly not know them anymore.

I aim to give each kid a chance one every two weeks. That means it is about 4 to 5 a day. That is do able.
We use our sight words for HMH. We add other words throughout the year. This looks wonderful. My kids struggle with trying to sound out new words they encounter.
Thanks for all your work.
This is the most amazing time to be a K teacher!! As you do all of your end if the year assessments and look back to where they started and where they are now it's AMAZING how far they have come. Their ability to take the sight words and really begin reading is awesome. I can't keep them away from reading books. :). Love this pack because they still need reinforcement on being able to read the sight words ( they trip them up really easy some days). Be proud of how far we have taken our k kids!!
My first graders have finished the other two sets and my kindergarteners are not far behind. My daughter visited my class and was amazed at how well they did. We only have 3 days left so will send this home for summer work.
I am finishing my first year of teaching K…and yes, I love where they are now! We don't measure sight words like you do, but our F&P goal for the end of the year was D–I've finished testing about half my class, and although I have a couple below, I have 4 kids right on D and then 6 kids who range from F to M! (If your district doesn't use F&P, J is considered the end of first grade.) I'm so excited for them and proud of them!!
Anyway, I did struggle with our list of 40 sight words this year, not being sure how to manage it and how often to test them…we were just given a new list that our district complied from the dolch and fry lists of 100 sight words that our kids will need to know for this year, so I need a great management system for sure. I know I'm going to use sight word wheels (like word family wheels) as opposed to word rings because I tried that this year and wore myself out with all the cutting…and then half my students lost theirs anyway. :-/ But I love your idea of keeping everything in one mobile basket, and your sight word practice sheets look great!! I am pinning this to come back to as soon as this year is over and I can breathe again and start thinking seriously about next year. 🙂
WAY TO GO GOOD READERS! I know what is exciting.
We don't use a list. We follow the treasures reading program which is pretty close to the dolch list 1. My students only learn 30 words in the program but I try to teach them 50. They seem to struggle with words that are similar such as have/here and what/with…..
We don' have an offical list but I do struggle to teach 50 words on the Dolch1 list. I do have a few high learners and your Fry word 3 looks like it would be a great help to challenge those higher students!
