Great Learning Game for Kids

November 19, 2018 By Mary Amoson Leave a Comment

Great learning games for kids are a fun way to sneak a little bit of learning into our classroom. I want to share a few great game options with you. Many of these are on sale now and this week with Black Friday. Additionally, these games are timeless and can be used year after year.

Learning Games for 3-5 Years Old (Preschoolers)

1. The Cat in the Hat I Can Do That Card Game
First, this may look like a tradition board game but it is not. This game is a positive twist on games that encourages movement and fun. Not only can be easily be a family hit, but a classroom hit as well.

2. Crocodile Dentist
Next, this is a classic game many of us remember from our childhood. Not only does it add a little OT help, but it is great for taking turns.  Want to make it educational? Simply add some flash cards to make this a learning game!

3. World of Disney Eye Found It
Now, we have this game at my house and my children love it. It is great for teamwork and visual discrimination.

4. Pete the Cat The Missing Cupcakes Game
This is a FUN game, even for non readers. This game is great for memory building, but is also random luck for winning, which means it is a great game to teach winning and losing with.

5. The Sneaky Snacky Squirrel
This is an award winning game! It uses OT skills, counting, and number sense skills as well. It is made for up to 4 learners at once and the squirrel “squeezer” is the cutest.

6. Hi Ho Cherry O Mickey Mouse Edition
We have this game as well and it is a hit. I feel every child needs to play Hi Ho Cherry O in their lives. What can you teach with this game? What can’t you teach! Taking turns, counting, one to one correspondence, and fun!

7. Race to the Treasure
This game was new to me and I have to tell you… I want it for my students! Here is why- “Kids love working together to beat the ogre. Players strategize, cooperate & build the path together. Building onto a path encourages kids to think 2 steps ahead & examine options.”  The students work together on this one!

Learning Games for 5 to 8 year olds (Kindergartens and On)

1. Kanoodle Extreme
Next, this is a critical thinking game with 300 options! This is great for early finishers and those who need that push to build brain power and think differently.

2. Operation
Classic Operation game is plain timeless. What a great game of patience and control. In addition to it being fun, it is a great OT game as well.

3. Clue Jr.
This game allows up to 6 players and is great for the process of elimination. We play clue at my house and we just can NOT get enough! We love it. Clue Junior is great for the school setting.

4. Scrabble Junior
Scrabble may be too hard and open ended for little learners, bit this version is great for MATCHING words. It can be a great basic introduction to a much harder game down the line. Soon, they will be playing this game by themselves.

5. Mouse Trap
Here is another classic game that every child should play in their childhood. This is STEM before STEM was STEM. Build a trap. I think this would be perfect inspiration for those leprechaun traps we like to build in the spring.

6. Hedbanz
Finally, I love this game and how much fun it is. We play this often at home and DAILY in my Kindergarten classroom.

This week seemed to be the longest and slowest all This week seemed to be the longest and slowest all at the same time. In science, we dove into the water cycle. On Friday, we got to try some simple (covid friendly) science experiments. We melted colors ice cubes to show states of matter changes. Then we did small cups for sink float. We predicted if each item would sick or float, then tested out. We can choose f2f or virtual this week, so I only had 12 in the room with me and 8 at home.
