Easy Prep and Learning Filled the 50th Day of School

Today we celebrated our 50th day of school! We have learned so much in the first 50 days and we couldn’t wait to integrate our learning into this fun day. What a fun way to celebrate the 50th day. Check out this Easy Prep and Learning Filled 50th Day of School.

50th Day of School Literacy

For the 50th Day of School Literacy, we do an open-choice board and I can’t wait to share with you our learning options for the day!

First, I showed my class a simple PowerPoint highlighting what it was like during the 1950s. Then we decided on things we would want and things we would not want from the 1950s. What a great chance to talk about our opinions and what we like!

Then, in small groups, we used this topic to write about! Some students chose clothing options, like shirts, dresses, jeans, and more. While others chose things they could use like cars or something to play music.

Next, students write these words down on either their want or they do not want list. We are actually practicing handwriting and writing words and using word walls. Plus, the discussions we have with students are always so fun!

We loved learning about the 50s with this 1950s reader.

Next, we have a simple reader to cover the 50s. What a fun way to talk about this time period. My students worked on tracking text and using pictures to help with words.

50th Day of School Math Fun

Check out this FUN counting sets activity. We planned to use paint on these on the 50th day, but last minute we had to change it up to markers. Did our learners care? Nope… they loved using colors to create the number 50!

Another activity we loved is these 50 mats. Simply laminate these and let your little learners circle to the number 50 when they find it. It is an easier math skill and can be used in a variety of ways.

Then, we can use these writing the number 50 differentiated writing sheets. You can even copy these back to back so allow students to pick the one that works best for them. I loved watching students use spacing between their numbers to create a 50 and not a 5 and 0.

Next, one of my favorite math activities is the 50 mats. Make two copies, then cut one copy apart in random pictures. Then, have students use the full mat to be the base and place the pieces like puzzles on top of the base.

Breaking Down Numbers with the 50th Day of School

In small groups, we worked on breaking down numbers into tens and ones. Since this is our standard for easier numbers, we thought we would stretch into the number 50 to see how well we understand numbers.

First, we take the cards and break down the number into tens and ones using dry-erase markers. Then we use base ten blocks to build the numbers.

You can see there are many versions of this game, including 6 color-coded sets with two levels. (The orange and purple sets are an easier option.) We like to write in the base ten numbers and use base ten blocks to build the numbers, adding a level of hands-on fun.
