Daily 5 Using If You Give a Pig a Pancake

December 6, 2012 by Mary Amoson 2 Comments

So many teachers ask me about Daily 5 and how it works in my room. I promised to give you guys a glimpse of my room and daily 5 every now and then to let you see how I do it with my students.
Last week (AKA the week of sickness) we learned about the letter Pp. I love using the book, If You Give a Pig a Pancake by Laura Numeroff.

And I use my FUN pack to go with it.
here on TpT
For word work this week, my students worked on making the using the Pp. We also did some Pp sorting activities. We sequenced the story and did some retelling activities using vocabulary words from the text. We also played memory and ABC order with these terms.
My group made pancakes (We did this by reading the directions, measuring the ingredients, doing step by step what is asked, and we also talked about how heat changes the batter into pancakes. Then we ate them!)
My assistant group used various writing prompts to get the students thinking and writing about using the text.
Another day we played a reading comprehension game to work with the kids on what they read and what they take away from the story.
We also listened to the book at our listening station.
Did we do all this in one day? NO WAY
Did we learn and use other text and activities to aid and assist learning? ABSOLUTELY
Does this help you out? PLEASE let me know! (hehe)

I love that you used a theme with your Daily 5 and added activities based off a book! I think I am going to start doing this! Thanks for the inspiration! I am your newest follower!

Anyone have ideas other than calligraphy to help students write cleaner and more correctly?
