Daily 5 and FUN… St. Paddy’s Day Style

March 14, 2013 by Mary Amoson 1 Comment

How many of you are still on the Daily 5 journey?
I am still loving it and making it my own. I still work with my kids everyday in one of the stations, as does my assistanct.
Since St. Paddy’s Day is coming, we are using this holiday to make learning fun.
We are using the book, There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Clover book.
This book can also be found on my favorite reading app, Storia from Scholastic.
Here were my Stations today.

 I run 8 stations a day.
Working on Writing- We did some spelling word writing with the -old family. This writing station is independent.
Listening to Reading- We did a listening and following directions coloring sheet using the listening station. It was based on the book.*
Read to Self- We allowed students to read their little reader this book.*
Read to Others- They can practice reading the same little book or the real copies of the Clover book.
Word Work- We did a Vv sort since the letter Vv is our letter of the week.
iPads- We used the Storia app to read or listen to the There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Clover book.
With Me- We wrote about the lady and what she ate from the book using the word wall. My students get assistance writing here and we work on quality writing.*
With My Assistant- We played a reading comprehension game based on this book. This is always a class favorite and it covers so many Common Core reading standards.*
Of course, learning occurs ALL day.
We worked on sequencing the story.*
{Yeah, my pocket chart needs a good cleaning!}
And we made some Retelling Art.
We make these ladies and then use the provided retelling strips to retell the story
and make it MORE fun!
And we made rainbow cupcakes! YUMMY!
I don’t know why but I am still shocked each year when the colors actually hold and create the rainbow.
Check out the directions {here} from an old blog post.
*All of these activities with this star next to it are from my unit here.
And my Listen Station and iPad station direction cards are here.
These are my LIFESAVER because these stations can drive me INSANE!!

Just started centers this week for the first time! I've been too scared to attempt it before, and now I'm doing it with my largest class size ever! Love the iPod and listening centers!

Purchased your Old Lady Clover pack and my kids have loved it! Thanks for the hard work!
