Hungry Caterpillar Activities and Printables
Here are some skill-building activities we use to integrate with our Very Hungry Caterpillar theme and insect week. I hope you guys are ready for a few math center ideas we used this week as we learned about insects.
Insect Graph for Yellow Table
The yellow table held our graphing center. This is a simple Hungry Caterpillar Printable. I made this simple graph sheet for some insect erasers. I got these erasers {here} on Amazon. And to tell you the truth, I am not loving this graphing sheet that I made about too many years ago to count.
So I stopped the presses and made you guys a freebie insect graphing sheet to use next year. You can grab it here completely free with a colored version and a black-and-white version. Just remember it doesn’t include the actual erasers.
Number Writing at Red Table
The red table was the location of our writing numbers on 50 mats. There are themes for the book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar. You can see the cocoon version here. We also worked on number sense… always working on number sense. {Does it feel that way to you!?}
Hungry Caterpillar Ten Frames at Purple Table
This station, at the purple table, was also caterpillar themed with fruit ten frame cards. We picked a card, then colored it in the matching ten frames on our answer sheet. After counting the amount, we wrote the number in the box provided.
You could easily turn this into a write-the-room activity or bump game. My favorite part is when you write the number you counted under the letter for that card.
Butterfly Subtraction Problems at Blue Table
There is nothing wrong with working on just math problems, but why not make it a little more fun? The blue table contained these blue butterfly subtraction problems. One of the ways I make sure my students KNOW addition and subtraction is to CONSTANTLY give them both types of equations to solve.
To make this, I just took a boring subtraction worksheet and cut it apart. I put one problem on each butterfly, which is just accent pieces. Then I laminated the butterflies. It is so simple and we use it over and over again. Plus this is a really easy way to turn any worksheet into a hungry caterpillar activity.
Missing Addends at Green Table
The green table is a favorite of the fun Very Hungry Caterpillar Activities. This is a ten-frame missing added problems. This was a huge hit in making sets of ten. After working with making tens all week, we are getting faster and faster at math facts.
Most of the hungry caterpillar learning activities above came from this pack, which can be found here.
